In 29th of december 2017-13th of January 2018, I participated UWC Swaziland Short course. The short course was the most challenging experience in my life. When I first heard about this short course program from school, it wasn’t easy to decide to go because it was completely different news from my life. However, I thought this is good chance to be inspired and experience new thing so I just submitted my application. Luckily, I got accepted and from that day I started to prepare my journey. It wasn’t easy to prepare requirements all by myself. Without support from parents and school I would never imagine to participate this programe.
The theme of this short course was ‘Together for Development’. It was a three-week programme held at the Waterford Kamhlaba UWC of Southern Africa. It was the only short course on the African continent. We covered many topics related to development. The lectures were about Economic development, Social Entrepreneurships, Gender, Enviroment, Arts, Education, Activism etc. It was very useful for me because at the school I don’t study these kinds so it was good opportunity to learn new things out of school.
At the short course, I met many different friends from Angola, Belgium, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Chile, Costa Rica, Finland, Gambia, Germany, Italy, India, Lithuania, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Palestine, Rwanda, South Korea, Switzerland, Swaziland, Tanzania, UK, USA, Zimbabwe. This was my first time meeting various nations at the same time. They were all very initiative and passion to global issues. Through the lecture we listened and shared our thoughts and personal stories.
Since, I was the only Asian at the short course I stand for many positions. I shared Asian perspectives and real life stories living in asia. When I first knew that I am the only Asian in this program I was quite worried but people were nice to me and there was no discrimination to each other. I felt free to those people and begin to be more open minded. It was great time to talk about the development deeply. I never had thought about it deeply before but as the lecture continues I started truly concerning about the global issues. The short course made me find the new lease on my life.
If someone in my school concerning about sign up for the Short course, I would definitely recommend participate it. The UWC short course not only broad your knowledge but also make you global-minded.
